Nazrul Institute releases 1,238 Nazrul songs

Kazi Nazrul Islam is believed to have penned around 5,000 songs, of which over 3,000 exist. The poet-lyricist-composer also produced, and supervised records of over 1,500 songs

Nazrul Institute released 1,238 Nazrul songs, which were recorded during the poet’s lifetime, at a program held at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum on Friday.

The songs were collected from original gramophone records, and present the original compositions following staff notations.

Besides the DVDs containing the 1,238 songs, five books of standard staff notations of 125 songs were also launched at the event.

State minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid was present as the chief guest, and launched the DVDs and books. Among others, Nazrul researcher AFM Hayatullah, Nazrul Institute executive director M Abdur Razzak Bhuiyan, and Bangladesh National Museum director general Reaz Ahmed were present on the occasion.

Nazrul Institute trusty board chairman and national professor Rafiqul Islam presided over the meeting.

Nazrul Institute has earlier published the standard notations of 1,125 Nazrul songs in 45 volumes.

These notations are based on the songs recorded under Nazrul’s supervision, and sung by noted singers like Abbasuddin Ahmad, Angur Bala, Indu Bala, K Mallick, Satinath Mukhopaddhay, Mrinal Kanti Ghosh, and others.
