‘Doctor Sleep’ teaser: Ewan McGregor shines in ‘The Shining’ sequel

The director, Mike Flanagan, is a horror film veteran with mediocre six point something ratings on IMDb for all of his films

In a world of movie franchises, it was only a matter of time for Stephen King’s 2013 novel “Doctor Sleep,” sequel to his magnum opus “The Shining,” to be adapted to the big screen. After the 1977 novel was hailed as a masterpiece—and Stanley Kubrick’s movie adaptation of the same name received classic status—the sheer fact that this is the official sequel is enough to fill theatre seats on the opening weekend. Add to it the fact that “Moulin Rouge” star Ewan McGregor is playing the central character of Danny Torrance and you’ve got yourself a sure hit.

The director, Mike Flanagan, is a horror film veteran with mediocre six point something ratings on IMDb for all of his films. He has, however, directed a Netflix show “The Haunting of Hill House” (2018) that garnered an astounding 8.7 on IMDb. If you’re a fan of the genre, you already know that horror flicks usually get lower ratings, and for good reason.

We know by now how fiercely Netflix promotes its directors. So, it’s not surprising that Flanagan got this gig. How he will follow up Kubrick’s immaculate work of art remains to be seen.

“Instinctively, recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra (Kyleigh Curran) has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality,” the official synopsis reads. “Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose.”

I read the book when it came out in 2013. It was a little underwhelming considering the intense journey “The Shining” took us through. Also, my copy was missing 20 pages in the middle. So, what do I know? One can never be sure whether a book one buys from a local store in Dhaka is original.

In the teaser of “Doctor Sleep,” we are back with Danny Torrance 40 years after the haunted hotel incidents. The telepathic power known as “the shining” pays him frequent visits in his solitary hotel room. Danny meets Abra (Kyleigh Curran), a teenager who shares his gift. He is still troubled by the passing of his possessed father, Jack (played by the divine Jack Nicholson in “The Shining”). The sequel will contain references to Kubrick’s movie, including the petrifying identical twins.

“Doctor Sleep” will be released globally on October 30 and in the United States on November 8.
