Theatre troupe Swapnadal staged a play on Saturday at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as a tribute to the victims of Sri Lanka terrorist attacks on April 21.
The play titled “Tringsha Shatabdi” is an adaptation from a play by Indian playwright Badal Sircar.
Directed and adapted by Zahid Repon, the play focuses on genocides that took place at different times across the world.
An interesting aspect of the play is that it interrogates iconic historical characters who in some ways contributed to these genocide and bombings. The characters include Einstein, Maj Ferebee - pilot of the aircraft that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, and Maj Claude Eatherly - who carried the nuclear bomb attack on Nagasaki.
The cast of the play includes Juyena Shabnam, Fazle Rabbi Sukarna, Samad Bhuiyan, Shishir Sikder, Amzad Sharif, Mostafizur Rahman, Jebun Nesa, Saidul Islam, Rezaul Mawla, Mehedy Rana, Tanvir Sheikh, and Jahid Ripon among others.
Last year, the anti-war play was staged at the Festival Tokyo in Japan. The much acclaimed production by Swapnadal was also staged at various international theatre festivals including “A Season of Bangla Drama 2015” in the United Kingdom, National School of Drama in New Delhi and Bharat Ranga Natya Utsab in India in 2015.
