Popular Bangladeshi singer Nazmun Munira Nancy—and her husband Najimuzzan Zayed—have been acquitted in a woman's torture case.

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Rukunuzzaman gave the verdict on Tuesday.

According to the case sources, Shahriar Aman Sunny—younger brother of singer Nancy and resident of Netrokona Municipal’s Chotogara road—often tortured his wife Samiun Nahar Shanu.

Shanu claimed the torture took place at the Netrokona house of her sister-in-law Nazmun Munira Nancy. The popular singer—and her husband Najimuzzan Zayed—were accused of provoking with torture in this same case.

On August 27, last year, Najimuzzan tried to kill Shanu at her house.

On September 6, last year, this case was filed by Shanu with Netrokona Model Police Station against her husband Zayed, sister-in-law Nazmun Monira Nancy, and brother-in-law Zayed under the Women and Child Repression act.

Later on—after the police completed the investigation and submitted the chargesheet against the accused in the court—the court granted this verdict to the singer and her husband in the case.

Advocate Jeevan Kumar Sarkar, lawyer of the accused, said: “The court has given their exemption to the prosecution of singer Nazmun Munira Nancy and her husband Najimuzzan Zayed.”

The plaintiff's elder brother Sohan Ahmed said: “The court has done an injustice to my sister. We will take the necessary legal action with the lawyer after consulting with the family members.”

When contacted by phone, the singer, Nancy, told Dhaka Tribune: “Do not contact me.”
