Humayun Ahmed’s 70th birth anniversary: Refined musical taste of Humayun Ahmed

Tuesday is the 70th birth anniversary of Humayun Ahmed, one of the most popular and beloved authors of Bangladesh.

Humayun Ahmed was considered a cultural legend for his contribution to different sectors of art and culture during his lifetime. 

He was born on November 13, 1948 in Mohongonj, Netrokona to Faizur Rahman Ahmed and Ayesha Foyez. Humayun was the eldest of five children.

One of Bangladesh’s best-selling authors, Ahmed was idealized by men and women who grew up reading his books and watching his shows in the 1980s and 1990s. His works are equally popular even today. 

The eminent writer, filmmaker wrote many songs too. He also popularized the folk songs throughout his films and dramas. He used a Hason Raja song at the end of each episode of popular TV serial “Aj Robibar.” 

Humayun Ahmed wrote lyrics for his films as well. In 1994, Ahmed wrote and directed his first film, called “Aguner Poroshmoni.” 

He penned the lyrics of “Ek Je Chhilo Shonar Konya,” during the shoot of his debut film.  

Renowned singer Subir Nandi was the playback artiste for many popular songs including “Ekta Chhilo Shonar Konya” and “O Amar Ural Ponkhi Rey”, written by Ahmed. Nandi termed Humayun as a shining devotee of music as well as a great listener. 

While talking about his experience of working with Humayun Ahmed, Habib Wahid told the Dhaka Tribune: “I got to meet Humayun Ahmed twice. When I first had sent him the song, it had a happy vibe but he wanted a sad song.”

“So, sir called me one day and asked me to change it a little bit which I did, later the song received much acclamation - people really liked the song.” 

Fazlur Rahman Babu told the Dhaka Triune: “Music director Maksud Jamil Mintuapproached me one day to playback the songs of Ghetu Putro Komola as those were ‘Ghetu’ songs and they needed somebody to sing the songs accordingly.”

“So, I sang five songs in the film with sheer professionalism and sincerity”, he added.

Humayun Ahmed is no more with us. But his works have immortalized him. He will always remain alive in our hearts through his diverse creations.
