China is turning into Aamir Khan's second home as his films are constantly breaking records at the Chinese box office. His film “Dangal” broke all previous records of Bollywood films released in China with a whopping $193 million revenue. Recently his latest film “Secret Superstar" even surpassed world wide major blockbuster “Star Wars: Last Jedi” after one week of its local release in China on January 19. These statistics were recently published by Chinese ticketing data provider, Mayoan.
According to boxofficemojo.com, Aamir’s “Dangal” drew more than $193 million in China last year which is the second highest grossing foreign film in China, placed right after Hollywood blockbuster “Transformers: The Last Knight.”
Now Maoyan estimates, Aamir's “Secret Superstar” is on track to break the record of his “Dangal” in China with box office revenue of up to 743 million Yuan ($117 million) and making it the second highest grossing foreign film in China.
Bollywood actor-producer Aamir Khan's second straight hit in the second largest film market of the world has proved that China is evolving from franchise fare like Universal Pictures’ “Fast & Furious” instalments to a taste for films from all around the world. Based on results from the past 12 months alone, hits from India, Thailand and Spain show China’s box-office may already be less blockbuster-centric than America’s.
The film stars Zaria Wasim who plays the role of Insia, a teenage girl who dreams of becoming a singer. The film, written and directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan tells the story of how she (Insia) fulfils her dreams by keeping her identity a secret.
On the other hand, The official Xinhua News Agency has recently made a diplomatic connection in an editorial: “Chinese filmgoers’ appreciation of Aamir Khan’s films reflect the common aesthetic pursuit of the two countries, which should be extended from the cultural aspect to broader areas, including politics and the economy.”
