Nazmul Islam Lalien
A Bangladeshi documentary titled “People who Crossed River Naf” based on the recent Rohingya plight got selected in Italy’s Cefalu Film Festival’s competitive segment on January 14 and is currently running for the Pino Scicolone Award. The film was directed by young filmmaker Nazmul Islam Lalien.
The seven minute long documentary which focuses the humanitarian crisis in Bangladesh-Myanmar borders and the great migration of the Rohingya people helplessly entering Bangladesh by crossing the Naf river (a river which separates the two nations), was selected in the short documentary category of the festival.
The film’s director, Lalien, told Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime: “I tried my best to focus on what actually happened while my team visited the refugee camps near Naf river in Cox’s Bazar. My film’s narrative tries to depict the visuals, sounds and abandonment of the Rohingya people.”
He added: “According to UNHCR's Late October 2017 report more than 600,000 Rohingya refugees crossed the Naf river since Bangladesh opened its borders to accept them as refugees. My film tries to show the crisis of the Naf river banks as we saw hundreds of thousands of people crossing the Naf river and getting into Bangladesh in search of shelter, safety and food during my team’s visit on late September 2017. We shot the whole film with a GoPro action cam.”
The short documentary, produced by Amirul Rajiv and Muhammad Anwar Hossain, will premiere at the Cefalu Film Festival on May 1, 2018 in Italy’s Cefalu. Siesta Subtitle Solution is the distributor of the documentary in the international film festival circuit.
Lalien is currently busy working on the pre-production phase of his debut feature film titled “Jolaronney - Inside the Sanctuary,” where he is both the writer and the director. Nazmul Islam Lalien
