The 90th Oscars will be held on March 4, 2018 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.Two songs from the Malayalam film Pulimurugan secured a spot on the Oscar shortlist for best original song. Composer Gopi Sundar also made it to the list of best original score for his work in the film.
“Kaadanayum Kaalchilambe” and “Maanathe Maarikurumbe” are the only songs to be shortlisted this year from India. The songs will compete with 68 others to win an Oscar nomination that will be announced on January 23.
Starring Mohanlal, Vysakh's Pulimurugan is the biggest blockbuster of all time in Malayalam cinema. It is also the first Malayalam movie to gross over Rs100 crore at box offices worldwide.
An overjoyed Gopi Sundar, took to Facebook to express his gratitude. He wrote: “All God’s grace… No words.”
He told Times of India: "I am still thanking God for this honour. I am someone who won a National Award despite never being considered for a State Award. Making it to the Oscar list is definitely a big moment for me.”
The composer said he had dedicated close to a month for his work on the film. He and director Vysakh rented an apartment in Chennai to come up with the theme.
