Director Badrul Anam Saud, who has earned plaudits for his works on the small screen, is all set to release his full length directorial début Gohin Baluchor on October 20. Set in a char, chronicling a love story, Gohin Baluchor revolves around the lives of three young romantics.Gohin Baluchor features both fresh and familiar faces from the industry. The leads will be portrayed by young actors Abu Hurayra Tanvir, Jannatun Nur Moon, and Nilanjona Neela, while seasoned actors such as Raisul Islam Asad, Suborna Mustafa, Afroza Banu, Fazlur Rhaman Babu, Shahadat Hossain, and Bannya Mirza will also don important roles in the film.
Ahead of the release of the film, Dhaka Tribune's Showtime reached out to the celebrity couple Badrul Anam Saud and Suborna Mustafa, to talk about their first silver screen venture together, among other things.
When asked about his expectations regarding his debut venture, Badrul Anam Saud, the noted director and playwright said that he looks forward to a wide success of his debut venture. Unlike many others, Saud also extends his best wishes to all the other films that are going to hit the screens in the same month.
“Gohin Baluchor is my debut full length film. Naturally, everyone expects a little more when it comes to their own creations. But I will not go for that now, because there are some other movies as well, which are going to be released this October, and I expect that the audience will enjoy each of them in the hall.”
“Our industry is passing a rough time and we should get over this. This is why I want all the coming films to be blockbuster hits. Obviously, I hope the audience like my film, because otherwise I will be very nervous,” Saud added.
Suborna Mustafa, the veteran actress, who is happily married to Saud for the last few years, has had her fair share of experience working with Saud in television. But this is the first time the couple is collaborating for a full length film. Talking about her experience with Saud at the helm, Suborna tags Saud as a perfectionist, saying, “We had done long serials for TV before, including the likes of Doll's House and Gohine. Saud is the type of director who never compromises. Whatever it is, TV or film, he wants his works to be perfect and so happened with Gohin Baluchor.”
“To do his job right in the big screen, Saud made us do one shot twenty one times. He didn't compromise. As a director, Saud loves to do his work in detail, which is somehow not so easy to do when it comes to TV plays. In Gohin Baluchor, he finally got the space to do what he wants. He kept challenging us throughout the shoot and I believe the whole crew responded well to his challenge,” she added.
Saud, on the other hand, humbly believes that there’s still a lot for him to learn about the big screen. “I've started working from 2000, and film was something I've always wanted to do. While working for TV, we have to compromise a lot of things but when it comes to films, there's no chance of compromising. After working for 16-17years in television, I was still apprehensive about whether I'd be able to master the language of big screen.”
The transition from small screen to films is a tall order for any director. But given the setting of Gohin Baluchor, it turned out to be even harder for the film’s team. As Saud said it, “I shot the whole film on a char (river island). It's really hard to work in the water. We couldn't maintain balance on the boats when we needed it the most. On top of that, we shot the film during the winter season and many of the crew members had to pass the whole day in water in wet clothes.”
“I have travelled districts after districts to find the perfect location for the film but couldn’t find the one. After I was well into my quest, Suborna came up with a connection in Barisal and hooked me up with some locals there. I eventually ended up in Barisal, at a village, almost the whole of which once was owned by Suborna’s ancestors and found the perfect location,” Saud said regarding the setting where Gohin Baluchor was shot. Asked how he was treated by the people of his in-law’s, Saud beamed, stating that the whole team loved the hospitality of the people around there, who used to cook and send food for the whole crew on set.
When asked about the nature of the couple’s relationship on set, Suborna replied that it was strictly professional. “When Saud is the director I stop being his wife and leave the domestic affairs at home for the kind of person I am. Obviously, as a senior in the industry, I have some additional duties and these are mostly with the unit. When I felt like I need to discuss something with Saud regarding a particular scene or even the film, I just went out and talked.”
Badrul Anam Saud has written the film’s story, dialogue and screenplay. The National Filmmaking Grant winning film is made in support of Friends Movies International and Shaatkahon Productions. Uttam Guha worked as the art director of the film, while Wahida Mollick Jolly was in charge of costumes. Emon Shaha has directed the film’s music, while Naziba Basher is the choreographer. Komol Chandra Das worked behind the camera as the cinematographer. Produced by Satkahon and Friends Movies International, Jaaz Multimedia will distribute the film.
