Biggest Golden Globes film snubs and surprises

Update : 15 Dec 2016, 02:56 PM
Damien Chazelle’s Los Angeles musical La La Land led with seven Golden Globes nominations and Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight close on it’s heels with six nods. The other nominees for Best picture, drama, includes Manchester by the Sea, Lion, Hell or High Water and Hacksaw Ridge. However, the accolade, which is bestowed by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recognising excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign, still had plenty of brush-offs and surprises. Here's our say at the biggest snubs and surprises.

SNUB

Martin Scorsese’s long-passion project, Silence, about Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan, left empty-handed. So did the Tom Hanks film Sully, which is about the miraculous Hudson plane landing. The much-anticipated Hidden Figures, which stars Taraji P Henson as a black female mathematician who helped American astronauts get into orbit, collected just two nominations: for best supporting actress (Octavia Spencer) and the best score. Finding Dory, the highest-grossing film at the 2016 box office missed out on the Best Animated Feature nomination despite the film's positive reviews. Kate Beckinsale's mannered, salty work in Love & Friendship was one of praised performances of the year. However, Beckinsale's charm in the Whit Stillman's Jane Austen adaptation did not earn her any Globes nod.

SURPRISE

Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge scored both Best Drama and Best Actor nods, the latter for Andrew Garfield. Pundits wondered whether Gibson's past wrong conducts would be a liability for the film and Garfield's awards chances, but the film's award-season performance thus far indicates it's not the case at all. And Deadpool, as the first Marvel film, earned not only a Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy nomination, but also an acting nod for Ryan Reynolds. Fashion designer-turned-director Tom Ford beat out Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Jeff Nichols for a spot in the best director category.
