Rampal protesters stage mass sit-in

The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources, Power and Ports has staged a sit-in as part of their protest campaign demanding cancellation of the 1,320MW coal-fired power plant near the Sundarbans in Rampal.The citizens’ platform observed the countrywide mass sit-in from 11am to 1pm Saturday to press home its six-point demands including withdrawal of the decision to hike gas prices. In Dhaka, the programme was organised in front of National Press Club.

Rampal protesters stage mass sit-in in front of National Press Club/Dhaka Tribune “The government should retreat from the decision to build Rampal power plant, considering the welfare of the country, its people, and the Sundarbans,” Sheikh Muhammad Sahidullah said. Construction work on the 1,320MW coal-based power plant will begin at the end of March amid protest from environmentalists.
