Polluted air continues to affect residents of Dhaka

The city of Dhaka continues to rank among the cities that have the lowest quality of air in the world, caused by severe pollution. In the US Air Quality Index (AQI), measured at 9am on Sunday, Dhaka ranked second in the real time air quality rankings. According to data available from a smartphone application named AirVisual, which shows the user real-time air pollution index of any city across the globe, Dhaka received a score of 242, which signifies very unhealthy air quality. On February 3, Dhaka received a US AQI score of 324 and 405, recorded around 9am and 9pm consecutively. Meanwhile, on February 2, air quality scores of Dhaka was recorded at 438 and 348 around 9am and 9pm. This level of air pollution is quite harmful to the citizens of the city. A screenshot taken from AirVisualThe AQI report published on January 31st in the CASE [Clean Air and Sustainable Environment] web portal, which is ran by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Dhaka’s air was designated as extremely unhealthy, with a score of 434. The lowest quality of air on Sunday detected in Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia at the time of measurement, which stood at 369, which means very hazardous.

Addressing the issue, Md Ziaul Haque, director (Air quality management), Department of Environment told the Dhaka Tribune: “The air quality in Dhaka will continue to remain like this throughout February and March. "However, the quality of air will improve during the monsoon season.”
