Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will deliver her speech at the 22nd session of conference of parties in Marrakech, Morocco in the midnight.
She will speak as the 48th speaker of the high level segment which will kick off from Tuesday and continue till November 17.
In her speech, the Bangladesh prime minister is expected to highlight her administration’s position to address the climate challenges and urge global leaders to intensify a campaign to advance the collective national and international efforts.
COP 22 is a global conference which began on November 7 and will run till November 18. This year’s edition will focus on adopting the historic Paris Agreement that was made during COP 21 in December last year.
Since 1994 UNFCC aims to reduce the greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere. The Conference of the Parties (COP) was selected as the supreme governing body of the Convention.
Before attending the COP 22, the Environment and Forest Secretary Kamal Uddin Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune: “Bangladesh's priority is to discuss adaptation finance as Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable nations in the world and it emits negligible amount of carbondioxide in the atmosphere.”
“Our country also needs huge resources to meet the adaptation demands,” he added.
He also said: “We will try to address the loss and damage of our country and people caused by the adverse impacts of climate change. Our target will be to set a mechanism so that we can reduce our risk.”
Hasina has left Dhaka for Marrakech on Sunday on a three-day official visit to attend two high-level segments of the 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP 22) that is hosted by UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud and Deputy Minister of Environment and Forest Abdullah Al Islam Jacob, among others, will accompany the prime minister during her visit.
She is scheduled to return home on November 16.
