The city’s Wari area, under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), has gone under a 21-day ‘general holiday’ after the area was marked as a red zone – with high density of Covid-19 infections. On Saturday, Day 1 of the lockdown, volunteers and police members were seen guarding the blockaded entry and exit points of the area, questioning those who attempted to leave the red zone to verify if their reasons are valid. Those who failed to convince the gatekeepers were sent back. Essential service providers such as food deliverymen were let inside.
The areas under lockdown are Tipu Sultan Road, Jahangir Road, Dhaka-Sylhet Highway (Joykali Temple to Balda Garden), Larmini Road, Hare Road, Wari Road, Rankin Street, and Nawab Road under DSCC Ward 41.
During the lockdown, all offices, schools, colleges, businesses, shops, markets, and places of worship will remain closed; only essential services such as pharmacies and grocer’s shops will remain open.
