A seminar on climate change and disaster management was held at Bangladesh Open University (BOU) on Tuesday.
Associate Prof Carol A Wilson from the Louisiana State University, USA was the keynote speaker.
She delivered a lecture on “Is the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta drowning? Elevation and sediment dynamics in the natural and human altered tidal deltaplain”.
Prof Carol formerly did research on “BanglaPIRE” and “Social and Environmental Change in Bangladesh”.
Her research focused on monitoring of tidal channel and mangrove platform dynamics – sedimentation, elevation, and water quality, said a press release issued on Tuesday.
While addressing on Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta issues, she said: “Sediment traps deployed in natural and embanked, but there also is a distinct seasonal pattern in both regions, with greater elevation change documented after the wet monsoon season (May-Sept), and either less elevation gain, or even elevation loss after the winter dry season (Jan-May). During the ‘Mega Monsoon' of 2017, mass accumulation rates in the Sundarbans were 40-70% greater than previous years which have cross-disciplinary implications for ecological productivity and social well-being.”
BOU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Syed Humayun Akhter attended the seminar he thanked Prof Carol for her contribution to Bangladesh through research and called for collaborative research with the Bangladesh Open University & Louisiana State University.
This seminar was organized by the Open School of the BOU.
Prof Sabina Yeasmin, Dean, Open School, in her concluding remark said: “this seminar is the part of series seminars of the school's two specialized programs, namely, Master of Disaster Management and Master of Climate Change.”
She also thanked Prof Carol for her contribution to Bangladesh through research.
Dr Mizanoor Rahman of the BOU, in his welcome speech, appreciated Prof Carol for conducting the research on social and environmental issues in Bangladesh.
BOU Pro-VC (Admin) Professor Dr Nasim Banu,Pro-VC (Education) Professor Dr Mahbuba Nasreen and Treasurer Professor Mostafa Azad Kamal also attended the seminar.
Faculty and officials from the BOU participated in the seminar.
