The Secondary School Certificate SSC), Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams of this year will be held depending on the coronavirus situation, says Education Minister Dipu Moni.
“We want to hold the public exams in 2022 but it is obvious they cannot be held on time because the students have not been able to attend classes properly,” she said while briefing the media at the Secretariat on Monday.
She said that it is likely the tests might be held in the middle of the year under a shortened syllabus.
The minister’s remarks come amid the upsurge of infections in Bangladesh and the rest of the world. On Monday, Bangladesh reported 2,231 new infections with a test positivity rate of over 8.5%.
According to the DGHS the cases have more than doubled in the past week.
While it is not yet possible to announce a specific date under the circumstances, the government would be closely monitoring everything and classes will continue, Dipu Moni said.
“We hope to announce the test dates at least two to three months before,” she said, adding, “However, no matter how much we want, it is not in our hands.”
“We were able to hold the SSC exams in 2020 but not the HSC. There were a lot of uncertainties in 2021 but we were able to hold the tests because the situation was in our favour,” she said.
The minister urged everyone to not pay heed to any rumors and follow the ministry and education board announcements.
Schools and education institutions across the country had remained closed for nearly one-and-half years when infections surged in March 2020. Schools were opened on a limited capacity in September last year.
