The future of higher education in Bangladesh presents a remarkable opportunity for private universities to evolve, expand, and align with global academic standards. In a recent conversation with members of the board of trustees of one of Bangladesh's top private universities, I was asked about my vision for elevating the institution to a level of global excellence.
Drawing from my over two decades of experience in academia and academic administration across the US, the Middle East, Australia, Ireland, and Bangladesh, I shared a comprehensive roadmap designed to foster innovation, research, and global engagement while addressing local educational needs.
Building on global standards and local relevance
Private universities can leverage their flexibility to tailor programs that meet global academic standards while addressing local challenges. My vision is centred around creating a university that aligns its curriculum and operations with globally recognized models, particularly the North American curriculum model, which emphasizes academic rigour, research orientation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
This model allows institutions to provide students with an education that is globally competitive while remaining relevant to local needs. Adapting this framework will enable universities to produce graduates who are not only well-versed in their disciplines, but also equipped to tackle global challenges.
Accreditation as a pathway to global recognition
A vital step in placing a university on the global stage is achieving international accreditation. Accreditation serves as an assurance of quality, signalling that the institution adheres to rigorous academic standards. This, in turn, enhances the university’s global reputation, opens doors to international collaborations, and boosts the employability of its graduates.
Accrediting business programs through AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), engineering programs through ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), and journalism programs through ACEJMC (Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications) would significantly heighten the university’s profile.
These accreditations are more than badges of honour; they attract top-tier faculty, research funding, and international students. In the long run, accreditation ensures that the university’s programs remain competitive and relevant in the global market.
Establishing global partnerships
Strategic partnerships with globally renowned universities are essential for building a university’s reputation and expanding its research capabilities. Collaborative relationships with North American and European institutions can provide opportunities for faculty exchanges, joint research projects, and student credit transfer programs. Such collaborations allow students to complete part of their education abroad, broadening their horizons and preparing them for international career opportunities.
In addition, universities can engage with global networks such as the United Nations Youth Programs and Erasmus Mundus. These initiatives provide students with leadership training and international exposure, equipping them with both the technical and soft skills -- such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving -- that are crucial for success in today’s globalized world.
Innovation through cutting-edge programs
To achieve global prominence, a university must offer programs that are at the forefront of emerging fields. Currently, fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, and Information Technology (IT) are reshaping industries worldwide. By introducing specialized programs in these areas and building Centres of Excellence in AI and IT, the university can become a leader in research and innovation.
Such centres would enable faculty and students to work on globally competitive research projects while addressing critical local challenges, such as climate change, urbanization, and digital transformation. These initiatives would not only boost the university’s academic standing but also position it as a thought leader in addressing pressing global issues.

Faculty development and research
A university’s strength lies in its faculty. Therefore, it is imperative to implement a robust faculty development program that supports ongoing research, encourages publication in high-impact journals, and promotes global collaboration. A university must actively engage its faculty in research initiatives to establish itself as a leader in various academic disciplines.
Research collaborations with international institutions and industry partners can lead to groundbreaking discoveries, while also providing students with hands-on research experience. To support such initiatives, the university can tap into funding opportunities from organizations such as USAID, the World Bank, and private foundations that support research in areas like sustainable development, healthcare, and education.
Infrastructure: Building a smart, sustainable campus
The modern university is not only defined by academic excellence but also by its infrastructure. Creating a smart campus -- one that integrates digital technology and sustainability into its operations -- will foster innovation and learning. Energy-efficient buildings, eco-friendly transportation solutions, and sustainable campus operations will not only reduce the university’s environmental footprint but also align it with global sustainability goals.
Additionally, embracing digital transformation will enhance both teaching and administrative processes. Incorporating learning management systems, virtual collaboration platforms, and online courses will ensure that the university remains competitive in an increasingly digitized world. Such innovations also provide flexibility for students and faculty to engage in continuous learning and research, regardless of their physical location.
Student-centred initiatives: Engaging and empowering students
To achieve global excellence, a university must place students at the centre of its initiatives. This includes providing a wide range of student services, such as academic advising, career counselling, mental health support, and extracurricular activities. Offering scholarships and financial aid to deserving students will ensure that higher education is accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic background.
Expanding extracurricular activities and creating opportunities for student leadership will further enrich the university experience. Entrepreneurship incubators, student-run organizations, and community engagement programs will not only enhance students’ skills but also foster a sense of responsibility toward societal improvement.
Collaborative governance and leadership
The success of any university is rooted in a shared commitment to excellence from all stakeholders -- faculty, students, alumni, and the administration. As Vice-Chancellor, I would prioritize collaborative governance, emphasizing transparency, inclusivity, and shared decision-making. Working closely with the board of trustees, faculty, and student representatives, we would develop a clear roadmap for the university’s growth, aligning both short-term and long-term goals with global trends and local needs.
Engaging alumni and industry partners
Fundraising is crucial for supporting research, infrastructure, and student initiatives. By actively engaging with alumni, philanthropists, and industry partners, the university can secure the financial resources needed for its growth. Alumni networks are invaluable not only for raising funds but also for providing mentorship and internship opportunities for students.
Industry partnerships can further enhance the university’s relevance and standing. Collaborating with industry leaders will provide students with practical learning opportunities while ensuring that the university’s programs are aligned with the needs of the job market.
Achieving global excellence requires a multidimensional approach that focuses on academic rigour, innovation, and global engagement. By implementing these strategies, a private university in Bangladesh can position itself as a leader in higher education. It will not only provide students with the tools to succeed in their careers but also cultivate a generation of leaders who are committed to making meaningful contributions to society.
My vision for uplifting private universities in Bangladesh is built on a strong foundation of international standards, innovation, and community engagement. By implementing these strategies and fostering a culture of excellence, I am confident that the university can achieve its full potential, becoming a beacon of knowledge, leadership, and progress on the global stage.
