Heavy rains are nothing new for Dhaka, yet the planning of the city is utterly inadequate in dealing with this kind of weather.
First of all, the capital’s drainage system needs fixing -- when major roads get completely flooded, it is clear that something is very wrong.
Dhaka already has some of the worst traffic in the world, and the situation only becomes many times worse when the roads are waterlogged.
The good citizens of Dhaka cannot be expected to live like this: There must be a solution.
The authorities need to treat this problem as a foremost priority -- this means looking at not just immediate needs like fixing the drainage and sewage systems, but also longer term solutions, like better traffic management, and halting all development activity on wetland areas.
