Nourishing our future

Providing 11 million children with daily nourishment could be transformational for our country

Update : 06 Nov 2026, 08:05 AM

We certainly appreciate the government’s plan to dramatically expand the national school feeding program -- scaling coverage from 3.1 million to 11 million government primary school students across the country.

This is a deeply commendable initiative. Addressing primary education through the twin lenses of nutritional security and classroom retention is a progressive, essential strategy, and we can only hope for more decisions such as this.

In a country where child stunting, poverty, and post-primary dropouts remain severe challenges and have compromised our future, providing age-appropriate, quality meals in partnership with global experts like the World Food Program can transform the educational trajectory of millions of young citizens.

Indeed, the government correctly recognizes that learning outcomes cannot be separated from basic physical well-being. A hungry child cannot focus on foundational education.

Furthermore, incorporating community participation, specifically training local mothers in hygienic food preparation and distribution, adds a thoughtful layer of social empowerment and local oversight.

What is needed now is transparent implementation and execution of these plans. It is only then will this initiative boost attendance, combat malnutrition, safeguard child health, and foster genuine community ownership in our public education system.

Bangladesh’s policy landscape is littered with well-intentioned welfare schemes that stumbled as a result of corruption and disregard. Expanding coverage nearly fourfold will not be as simple as announcing the intention to do so.

Providing 11 million children with daily nourishment could be transformational for our country, but we must move swiftly from promises to implementation, ensuring that no child in Bangladesh is forced to choose between an empty stomach and an education.

The government has outlined a vision that deserves wholehearted public support. Now, it must deliver.
