Addressing our plastic crisis

Public awareness must be prioritized, along with adequate collection facilities and stronger enforcement

Update : 15 Oct 2026, 09:00 AM

Bangladesh’s decision to launch a national platform to tackle plastic pollution is a welcome step towards addressing one of the country’s most persistent environmental challenges.

However, its success will depend on whether we see real commitment to concrete action rather than it becoming another initiative that produces discussions without meaningful results.

Plastic pollution has become an increasingly visible threat across Bangladesh, with plastic waste continuing to damage ecosystems and threaten public health. Excessive reliance on single-use plastics, poor waste management, and inadequate recycling facilities have allowed the problem to grow.

The consequences affect everyone -- particularly communities whose livelihoods depend on healthy waterways and a clean environment.

Bringing together government agencies, businesses, development partners, and civil society can therefore help improve coordination and promote a circular economy.

However, consumers cannot be expected to shoulder the responsibility alone. Manufacturers, importers, and brand owners must also be held accountable for the waste generated by their products.

The government must establish clear targets for reducing plastic use, expanding recycling, and improving waste collection. Existing regulations must be enforced consistently, with meaningful penalties for non-compliance. Businesses should be encouraged to reduce unnecessary packaging and invest in reusable alternatives.

Without effective monitoring, even well-intentioned policies will struggle to deliver lasting change.

Waste collectors, sorters and recyclers also have a role to play. Many work in unsafe conditions without adequate protection or recognition, and improving their working conditions and integrating them into formal waste management systems would strengthen the country’s recycling capacity.

Public awareness must be prioritized, along with adequate collection facilities and stronger enforcement. Local authorities need sufficient resources to manage waste effectively, while households and businesses must have accessible disposal options.

This platform presents an opportunity to coordinate efforts and establish accountability across sectors. Its success must include reduced plastic waste, higher recycling rates, and cleaner rivers and neighbourhoods.

Bangladesh cannot afford another initiative that exists only on paper.
