The government’s renewed push to modernize the shipping sector, including digitalizing vessel registration, strengthening safety protocols, and upgrading port operations, is certainly a step in the right direction as far as economic development goes.

All of the modernization efforts must keep safety as a principal component. Bangladesh has witnessed too many tragic accidents on its waterways and as such, modernization must include strict enforcement of safety standards, proper training for crews, and accountability for operators who violate rules. A modern shipping sector, beyond being efficient, must first and foremost be safe.
Bangladesh, despite the challenges, continues to have significant economic ambitions, and a strong, efficient, and safe shipping sector will play a major role in ensuring those ambitions are met.
