As the world marks the International Day of Peace under the United Nations theme “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” the global landscape today is, to say the least, fractured.
Global leaders gathering for the 81st UN General Assembly face an international order that has been left reeling by persistent conflicts, severe economic disruption, and an accelerating climate crisis that threatens vulnerable nations first.
True peace extends beyond the mere signing of accords or temporary ceasefires. For a nation such as ours, it requires building resilient social foundations.
Investing in peace means channeling resources into conflict resolution, strengthening democratic institutions, and safeguarding human rights. Crucially, it also means addressing the socioeconomic inequities that fuel unrest.
In a year that looks increasingly like one defined by wars and global inflation alike, security and justice remain indispensable pillars of lasting stability.
However, given environmental degradation and economic challenges such as persistent and crippling inflation, in addition to energy crises, peace also means economic security and climate justice.
When communities lack basic security, clean water, or economic opportunity, social cohesion inevitably crumbles.
For Bangladesh, investing in peace begins at home and extends to our regional responsibilities.
Domestically in particular, it requires fostering inclusive dialogue, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that economic progress leaves no citizen behind. Regionally, it demands renewed international pressure to resolve the Rohingya crisis -- a protracted displacement that burdens our national resources and threatens regional stability.
Peace is not a passive state, nor can it be achieved solely in international conference rooms. It is an active, day-to-day commitment by governments, civil society, and citizens alike.
On this International Day of Peace, world leaders must move beyond performative pledges to build a world where peace is guaranteed for everyone, everywhere, every day.
