Finding solutions to cost of living

The objective of tax relief should ultimately be clear: Making essential goods more affordable

Update : 19 Sep 2026, 08:35 AM

It is unfortunate to see recent figures which showcase that tax relief has resulted in no real reduction in the unusually high or fluctuating market prices -- a clear disservice to consumers who deserve some financial relief on basic goods.

The government reduced duties and taxes on 63 essential commodities in the FY27 budget, including rice, pulses, edible oil, spices, and agricultural products. Yet prices of many of these goods have remained high or even increased.

Reducing taxes and duties on essential goods is a welcome step when the cost of living continues to put pressure on ordinary families. However, this glaring gap between policy and reality remains a serious concern.

There are legitimate factors behind some of these increases: Traders have pointed to higher fuel costs, energy shortages, floods, heavy rainfall, and disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

While these pressures cannot simply be dismissed, they should not become a blanket explanation for every price increase either.

The onus is, therefore, on the government to strengthen market monitoring and determine where the benefits of tax concessions are going. If importers, wholesalers, or intermediaries are absorbing the savings instead of passing them on, consumers are effectively being denied the relief that public policy intended to provide.

This is particularly important at this point in time, when household budgets are already stretched; recent reporting has found families cutting back on food and household necessities as everyday expenses continue to rise.

Tax reductions should be accompanied by transparency, competition, and effective oversight. Relevant agencies need to regularly compare import costs, wholesale prices, and retail prices, and take action where unjustified margins or manipulation are found.

The objective of tax relief should ultimately be clear: Making essential goods more affordable.

The government has taken the first step, but now it must ensure that the benefit actually reaches the people it was meant to help.
