Stabilizing the economy

The stable outlook offers Bangladesh a chance to accelerate long-delayed economic reforms

Update : 16 Sep 2026, 08:45 AM

Moody’s Ratings revising Bangladesh’s outlook to stable from negative, while holding our long-term rating at B2, is reason for some optimism, but it is clear that we are a long way from being economically comfortable.

We are a nation currently grappling with persistent economic strains, and that cannot be denied. As such, this shift is a welcome signal that the immediate downward spiral has been addressed, and the present administration deserves credit for it.

Indeed, the upgrade in outlook is a direct reflection of recent stabilization efforts. Moody’s rightfully pointed to a reduction in political uncertainty following the transition period, a gradual rebuilding of foreign exchange reserves, and a powerful surge in remittance inflows from our expatriate workforce.

These factors have collectively cushioned our external vulnerabilities and injected much-needed liquidity into our system, signaling that the worst may be behind us.

However, we must resist the temptation of premature celebration. A B2 rating remains firmly in speculative territory and serves as a stark reminder that international investors still view our market as high-risk. While the outlook suggests we have found our footing, it does not mean we are on a steep climb towards prosperity.

The challenges ahead therefore do not change and remain formidable. Moody's explicitly noted that deep-rooted structural weaknesses, most notably high inflation, a fragile banking sector plagued by non-performing loans, and structural revenue deficits, continue to cap our economic potential.

None of this should be a surprise to us, and we must do all we can to go beyond acknowledging our issues to devising sustainable solutions.

This stable outlook is not a badge of honour but rather a window of opportunity. For Bangladesh, the message is clear. This is a chance to accelerate reforms, not relax them.

A stable outlook can help restore investor confidence and ease financing pressures, but only if the government uses this moment to push forward with long‑delayed structural fixes for our country.
