Bangladesh's public hospitals are buckling under an unsustainable burden, and the latest figures should serve as a wake-up call.
According to official data, the average bed occupancy rate in 59 district hospitals reached an alarming 178% in 2024, while public medical college hospitals recorded an average occupancy of 164%.
Simply put, hospitals designed for 100 patients are routinely forced to accommodate far more, leaving patients to endure overcrowded wards, long waits, and diminished standards of care.
This is a matter that demands our urgent attention, as healthcare capacity is not something any nation can afford to take lightly.
The consequences of this extend well beyond patient discomfort. Overstretched facilities place immense pressure on doctors, nurses, and support staff, increasing the likelihood of medical errors -- and even burnout -- while reducing the quality of treatment.
As a result, many patients are compelled to seek care at expensive private facilities, pushing countless families into financial hardship.
Addressing this crisis requires more than simply adding hospital beds, however. While the government's ongoing initiatives to expand public hospitals and upgrade upazila health complexes are encouraging, infrastructure alone will not solve the problem.
Bangladesh must recruit and retain significantly more doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff while ensuring they are deployed where shortages are most acute.
Existing hospitals should be equipped with modern diagnostic tools and essential medicines, and primary healthcare services must be strengthened so that minor and preventive cases are treated locally instead of overwhelming tertiary hospitals.
Additionally, digital appointment systems, improved referral mechanisms, and greater investment in preventive healthcare can also help distribute patient loads more efficiently.
Healthcare is one of the fundamental responsibilities of the state. As Bangladesh's population grows and its healthcare needs become more complex, expanding both capacity and quality must be viewed as an urgent national imperative that demands sustained investment, strategic planning, and unwavering political commitment.
