Father’s day must inspire equality, nor patriarchy

This Father’s Day, let us remember that the role of a father is not to enforce hierarchy, but to nurture equality

Update : 21 Jun 2026, 03:03 PM

While Father’s Day is a day to celebrate the role of fathers and their role in nurturing families and guiding children, it is also a moment to reflect on the broader structures that shape our society.

And for a nation such as Bangladesh, it is an unfortunate reality that patriarchy and patriarchal norms remain deeply entrenched, often dictating how families function, how opportunities are distributed, and how voices are either amplified or silenced.

This is a day to remember that honouring fathers should never mean reinforcing retrograde thinking. Too often, patriarchal traditions have placed men at the centre of authority while relegating women and girls to secondary roles.

It is this imbalance that stifles progress, denies equal opportunities, and perpetuates cycles of discrimination. A society that clings to such norms cannot achieve genuine development, and will never be able to reach its full potential.

Moving forward requires rejecting the idea that leadership or decision‑making, let alone respect or dignity, belong to one gender alone.

Fathers, as role models, must embrace equality -- in their homes, in their workplaces, and especially in the values they pass on to their children.

True strength lies not in dominance, but in compassion, fairness, and respect.

Our leaders must also draft policies that ensure equal access to education, healthcare, and employment for all genders. Cultural attitudes must also evolve to celebrate shared responsibility in families, where fathers and mothers stand side by side.

Our future progress depends on dismantling patriarchal barriers. Development is not possible when half the population is held back by outdated norms. This Father’s Day, let us remember that the role of a father is not to enforce hierarchy, but to nurture equality. That is the legacy every father should aspire to have.
