Upskilling and diversifying our labour

Migrant workers must be equipped with training that allows them to compete in higher‑value industries

Update : 03 Apr 2026, 04:21 PM

The fact that expatriate Bangladeshis sent home $3.75 billion in remittances -- the highest monthly inflow in our history - is an achievement that deserves recognition. Remittance has long been a lifeline for our economy, sustaining families, stabilizing reserves, and providing crucial foreign currency at the most trying times.

However, while remittances have held steady for some time now, and while this record inflow will raise hopes, it must also not lull us into complacency.

Remittance is and will remain vital, but it has also been vulnerable for some time now. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is proof of just how quickly events that appear normal can change overnight. In addition, shifting labour markets and automation continue to threaten the stability of this source of income.

As such, we cannot afford to remain dependent on a narrow set of sectors and destinations and the need of the hour is upskilling and diversification.

Migrant workers must be equipped with training that allows them to compete in higher‑value industries rather than being confined to low‑wage, precarious jobs. At the same time, Bangladesh must expand its labour markets beyond traditional destinations, building opportunities in East Asia, Europe, and other emerging economies.

More importantly, remittance policy, much like any policy guiding the future of our nation, must be designed with equity in mind. Incentives should not only reward inflows but also support the workers themselves along with the families who depend on them, ensuring that remittance translates into education, healthcare, and community development.

Bangladesh owes much to its migrant workers and their contributions have carried the nation through crises and built the foundation of our reserves. However, the future demands foresight, not gratitude. To that end, it is diversification and upskilling that will ensure that remittance continues to remain a pillar of our economy.
