The nation demands change

Bangladesh itself has been handed a historic opportunity and the administration must seize it

Update : 15 Feb 2026, 03:26 PM

The recently concluded elections on February 12 have given us unmistakable clarity on not just the BNP’s win, but also what the nation wants moving forward.

With nearly 69% of voters endorsing the “yes” option, it is clear that the people desire the constitutional reforms as outlined in the July National Charter. Indeed, it is a resounding call for change. Citizens of this country have become weary of entrenched dysfunction and are now demanding a new architecture of governance, rejecting the inertia of the past.

Indeed, the responsibility is now with the newly elected BNP government - it is they who have been trusted to deliver the reforms that can reshape our state.

That more than 48 million voters chose reform tells us that we must remember the sacrifices made during the Monsoon Revolution of 2024 and treat reforms as a moral obligation.

The BNP government must therefore now act with urgency and clarity. Establishing an upper house of parliament, strengthening checks and balances, and ensuring accountability in public institutions are imperative to a better functioning Bangladesh.

Dialogue across party lines is also essential, as urged by Professor Ali Riaz. Reform cannot be monopolized by one political camp and will only be possible through collective political will and treated as a collective national project.

The referendum has given Bangladesh a rare moment of unity and squandering it would set us back once again. As such, we expect the BNP to resist the temptation of partisan triumphalism and instead embrace the responsibility of stewardship.

Bangladesh itself has been handed a historic opportunity and the administration must seize it - boldly, transparently, and inclusively. Anything less would betray the trust of millions who voted “yes.”
