The nuisance that is noise

This policy has the potential to make public spaces more liveable and respectful

Update : 10 Jan 2026, 01:07 AM

The government’s recent decision to begin imposing fines for noise violations is a welcome initiative that recognizes a nuisance that has been tolerated by too many for far too long.

From blaring loudspeakers to incessant honking, noise pollution has become more than just an annoyance; it is a daily occurrence that deters quality of life, disrupts sleep, affects children’s learning, and strains public health.

This step is, therefore, a positive one that acknowledges that a sound environment matters just as much as other pressing issues.

This policy has the potential to make public spaces more liveable and respectful. Empowering law enforcement to penalize excessive noise signals a shift away from the passive resignation that we have demonstrated towards a more active management of practices that affect everyone.

However, the success of this initiative will ultimately be determined not by its announcement, but by its execution. Clear guidelines must be established on acceptable decibel levels, designated quiet zones, and the times during which restrictions are applicable. Without such defined clarity, the enforcement of this rule risks becoming just another news report.

The authorities tasked with this responsibility need proper training as well. Enforcement requires appropriate tools and an understanding of when action is genuinely warranted. Haphazard penalties at the beginning will only seem performative, and lead to the regular perpetrators to dismiss the movement.

Public awareness campaigns are crucial to ensure effective enforcement. Citizens need to understand why noise matters, how it is measured, and how everyone benefits from a quieter environment. Efforts to change that are rooted in awareness are more sustainable than those imposed with no explanations.

For this regulation to succeed, thoughtful implementation, community engagement, and consistent, fair enforcement are all imperative. If done well, we are hopeful that we can build a quieter, healthier Bangladesh.
