Politics for the people

As we move through uncertain times towards what we hope to be a better future, we, the people, must play our role in demanding accountability

Update : 06 Nov 2025, 11:40 AM

A seminar held in the capital on Tuesday saw a host of experts from various fields -- from academics to diplomacy to political analysis -- come together to discuss the future of Bangladeshi politics and the changes that are required to uphold democracy. Of all the suggestions made by participants, one opinion seemed unanimous: Our politics as well as our politicians are in need of severe reform -- in practice and in principle.

This we wholeheartedly agree with.

In the last couple of decades, we have witnessed increasing political unrest, and more and more decisions being made that seemingly benefit no one but those already at the top. The essence of politics and governance has, sadly, been tarnished in a way that seems irreparable unless drastic measures are taken to restore ethical values in our political system.

We are now seeing a rise in tactics from the same parties that seemingly opposed such practices from the former powers, and that is largely due to the profound decay in the political culture of our county, carried out for generations through a money-making mindset and the need for ultimate control.

This is what needs to change.

There is no place for personal gain at the expense of the people in a democracy, and that is the future our youth fought for so passionately just last year.

It is absolutely vital, therefore, that our potential leaders and supporting participants in power earn back the trust of the people, preserve the sanctity of this basic right, and not allow factors unrelated to politics, like religion, social class, or personal ideologies, dictate the course that our nation will take.

As we move through uncertain times towards what we hope to be a better future, we, the people, must play our role in demanding accountability. We will only see a stronger democratic nation when we stop settling for what has become the norm.
