For too long, Dhaka has grown in an unplanned, haphazard way.
Because of a lack of vision, as things stand now, slums in the city are nearly uninhabitable -- with dilapidated buildings, lack of proper sanitation and waste management, and extremely unhygienic conditions.
That is why it is of utmost importance to have good quality affordable housing, and for that, the government should come forward and commit to proper public housing that addresses the needs of the urban poor.
For this purpose, multi-storied complexes, as opposed to one-storied slums, would make more efficient use of land in the city. No one should be without a roof over their head.
