The fight against dengue begins with pro-active preparedness

The fight against dengue cannot be won by city authorities alone and starts with each and every citizen

Update : 13 Jun 2025, 03:00 PM

We commend the recent decision by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to double the volume of insecticide sprayed daily -- from 30 to 60 litres -- in a bid to combat the spread of Aedes mosquitoes.

With dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases being an almost incessant threat to public health in our country, we have long called for pro-active preparedness in our bid to combat the worst of its effects.

Indeed, such an approach reflects both foresight and responsibility from city authorities. What is also further encouraging is that the DSCC’s approach is holistic: Not only will more insecticide be sprayed, but local dengue monitoring teams are being formed to ensure proper management, address manpower shortages, and maintain rigorous oversight of anti-mosquito operations.

These teams are tasked with verifying pesticide application, ensuring worker presence, operating mobile courts, and promoting cleanliness in homes and public spaces. That there are also dedicated health officers appointed, and that there shall be seminars involving experts to further spread awareness, tell us of the seriousness with which the DSCC is tackling this challenge.

However, while these measures are robust, the fight against dengue cannot be won by city authorities alone and starts with each and every citizen. Public awareness and participation therefore are vital; citizens must remain vigilant in eliminating stagnant water, maintaining household cleanliness, and following official guidance while community leaders, NGOs, and the private sector also have their own roles to play in spreading awareness and supporting prevention efforts.

While the DSCC’s pro-active stance should be an example, lasting success will depend on a concerted, society-wide effort. Only through shared responsibility can we hope to defeat dengue and safeguard public health.
