Fortifying our earthquake preparedness

Far too many buildings, including residential high-rises, lack proper seismic reinforcement

Update : 29 May 2025, 01:31 PM
The moderate earthquake that shook Dhaka and northeastern Bangladesh serves as yet another reminder of the country’s vulnerability to seismic events. While this tremor did not cause widespread destruction, it underscores an uncomfortable truth: Bangladesh remains woefully unprepared for a major earthquake.

We only need to look a few months back to understand just how swiftly and severely a forceful enough earthquake can upend lives: In January, Nepal experienced a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that left at least hundreds dead and even far more injured.

The tremors were felt across the sub-continent, including parts of Bangladesh, and the destruction was swift and unforgiving -- homes collapsed, infrastructure crumbled, and rescue efforts were hampered by the sheer scale of the disaster. The tragedy only further highlighted the urgent need for robust preparedness measures, something Bangladesh cannot afford to ignore.

As one of the most densely populated cities in the world, our capital city sits precariously close to active fault lines. Experts have long warned that a high-magnitude earthquake could cause widespread devastation, particularly given the city’s poorly regulated construction practices.

Far too many buildings, including residential high-rises, lack proper seismic reinforcement. In the event of a major quake, thousands could be trapped under rubble, and emergency response teams would struggle to navigate the chaos.

The incumbent government must take decisive action to mitigate this looming threat. It must ensure that building codes are strictly enforced, while developers must be held accountable for ensuring structures meet seismic safety standards.

Retro-fitting older buildings should be prioritized in parallel, while public awareness campaigns should be carried out to educate citizens on earthquake preparedness, including evacuation procedures and emergency response measures. More to the point, our disaster response infrastructure must be bolstered further.

Bangladesh cannot ignore the looming threat of a major seismic event any longer.
