Reviving our health sector

Our health sector does not lack potential, but what it needs now is purpose and drive

Update : 13 May 2025, 12:28 PM

Bangladesh must heed the words of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, who recently declared that the country faces a “window of opportunity” to transform its health sector -- not through sweeping overhauls, but by maximizing the potential within its existing structure.

Indeed, that there is confidence within the current structure from the chief advisor should be encouraging to every relevant stakeholder, and act as a rallying cry for purposeful action, discipline, and accountability within the sector.

Our health sector’s challenges have been well documented at this stage: Shortages of doctors and nurses, lapses in discipline, and a lack of accountability that too often undermines patient care.

Yet, as the chief advisor emphasized, at least a 25% improvement is possible simply by harnessing greater dedication and attention from every individual involved in healthcare delivery.

This is a realistic target, not an unattainable dream.

To achieve this, we must foster a culture of responsibility and pride among health professionals. The Health Sector Reform Commission’s recent recommendations provide a blueprint for systemic change, but reform must begin with the people who serve on the frontlines.

Indeed, it is the responsibility of every hospital and clinic, and of each and every individual associated with these institutions, to become a model of discipline and service, and thereby inspiring the general masses.

While the government’s plan to recruit 7,000 doctors and additional nurses is a welcome step towards alleviating workforce shortages, we have long known that numbers alone are not enough. Training, supervision, and a commitment to ethical standards are essential to ensure that any new recruits become agents of positive change.

Our health sector does not lack potential, but what it needs now is purpose and drive. We hope to see a collective determination to seize this moment, and deliver the care Bangladeshis have long deserved.
