The recent announcement of the new Dhaka-Khulna route via the Padma Bridge from December 24, which would cut the travel time to just four hours, marks a significant step forward in not only better connecting Dhaka to the Khulna division, but for the overall enhancing of rail connectivity in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh continues to grow as a nation at a rapid pace and as such, also proportionally faces pressing challenges in transportation. Our existing road networks are not only often congested, but are yet to be safe, with frequent accidents on our roads and highways.
As such, more investment in rail connectivity has always been the need of the hour. As the new route from Khulna to Dhaka allows for smoother travel for commuters and businesses alike, fostering economic growth, it is an opportunity for the authorities concerned to look at other possible routes to connect via rail, and also update existing rail networks for better efficiency.
It goes without saying how enhanced rail services will be vital for achieving our development goals. The railway system can play a pivotal role in promoting trade by providing a cost-effective means of transporting goods. This is particularly important for Khulna, a key economic hub known for its ports and industries.
