Taming inflation remains the biggest concern

Monitor supply chains and ensure competition in the market

Update : 11 Dec 2024, 10:28 AM

It is safe to say that the interim government continues to have among the most difficult tasks ever placed on an administration in this nation’s history as it looks to rebuild the economy from the sorry state left by the previous regime.

However, while we support and sympathize with those in the interim government, the fact that we have not been able to bring Inflation under control -- with November registering a four month high of 11.38% as per the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) -- poses a major roadblock to the economic recovery efforts that we have undertaken.

While reforms are well and good, with prices for essential goods and services continuing to rise, the quality of life for ordinary citizens continues to diminish. This naturally has ramifications, including an overall state of widespread concern among households and businesses alike.

Despite good intentions, as noted by noted economist Zahid Hussain, market management has failed. It is therefore essential, first and foremost, to continue to have any and all policies in place to curb inflation and bring it to a more manageable point.

Whether that be Bangladesh Bank considering further tightening monetary policy or having the means for having seamless imports and easing pressure on essentials, we must explore all options to stabilize prices and restore confidence in the economy.

In addition, there remain forces that are benefitting from this inflation situation. To that end, we agree with Zahid Hussain that we need to better monitor our supply chains and ensure competition in the market, while also preventing collusion in wholesale markets by nefarious parties looking to make gains at the expense of the people.

Reforms will continue, but at this hour, it is the challenge of rising inflation that must be tackled with immediate effect. Nothing is more important than ensuring people are not suffering at present.
