No place for communalism

Bangladesh is, and never has been, a land where communalist sentiments could be allowed to spread unchallenged

Update : 08 Dec 2024, 01:29 PM

As things stand, Bangladesh is undergoing an incredibly challenging moment in its history, with the interim government shepherding the country through this period of transition, waning law and order, all compounded by a lot of misinformation being bandied about by foreign powers about issues such as the safety of minority communities.

What the country absolutely cannot afford to stand at this juncture is communalism of any sorts.

According to reports, at least a couple of temples were reportedly ransacked, and numerous homes and shops belonging to Hindus were vandalized in Manglargaon, a remote village in Dowarabazar upazila of Sunamganj, following a Facebook post on Tuesday night, as alleged by locals. While the alleged perpetrator of the post had been detained for his own safety, it was not before protests broke out. Thankfully, the situation was brought under control after army personnel intervened with further support from local leaders and religious representatives.

Such stories are not unprecedented in Bangladesh, unfortunately. However, the fact that locals and religious representatives were able to quell any further unrest is something of a positive development.

According to law enforcement, the protest and subsequent ransacking of temples may have elements of premeditation behind them, with suspicions of mob incitation to target Hindu properties. These claims need to be investigated with the gravity they deserve -- given the abundance of misinformation and disinformation campaigns that Bangladesh has been subjected to, especially surrounding the safety of minority communities, it is not out of the bounds of reality for vested quarters to be involved.

However, what is abundantly clear is that Bangladesh is, and never has been, a land where communalist sentiments could be allowed to spread unchallenged. The chief advisor recently spoke about the importance of upholding the rights of our minority populations -- and it is in that spirit that we can envision a truly equal and just country for us all.
