Our minority population speak for themselves

Bangladeshi Hindus themselves continue to stand proud in the wake of the events of July and August

Update : 04 Dec 2024, 10:54 AM

Ever since the arrest of the Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das, the response from India has been baffling, chief of which saw protesters in India tearing down the Bangladesh national flag and setting it ablaze. The past few days have seen sections of the Indian media spreading misinformation about the state of the minority population in Bangladesh, claiming that Bangladesh is no longer safe for them.

To that end, the resident students of Dhaka University’s Jagannath Hall -- a dorm for minority students -- holding a protest march on Monday night condemning the attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in India’s Agartala and the subsequent assaults by some Indians at several border points is the perfect response to such misinformation.

It is clear to see from the actions of these students that members of our minority population speak for themselves, and in voicing their displeasure towards India, are making it crystal clear that they are and have been loyal towards their country.

It is indeed baffling that the Indian media -- and many Indians outside of the media -- continue to peddle such blatant misinformation about the state of minorities in Bangladesh.

While Bangladeshi Hindus themselves continue to stand proud in the wake of the events of July and August of this year that saw the end of the decade and a half long regime of the Awami League, we see people Indians speaking on behalf of them, informing the rest of the world that minorities are not safe in Bangladesh.

What is the reality is that Hindus and other minority populations in Bangladesh continue to be proud and loyal to their country, especially in the wake of the events of July and August, and have wholeheartedly rejected this sorry attempt by certain quarters in India to make them question their place as Bangladeshi citizens.
