That at least 482 children were reported killed from January to October this year, as per a report released by the Child Rights Advocacy Coalition of Bangladesh, is not only shocking and tragic, but a collective failure on the part of all of Bangladesh.
Of course, this number also includes the barbarity displayed by law enforcement and other agencies on behalf of the now-fallen Awami League regime; that a reported 121 children were killed during the months of July and August alone during the student-led protests will remain one of the most heinous acts of disregard ever displayed.
With that said, the reports also said that 217 children were raped, 61 children were victims of attempted rape, at least 85 children faced sexual harassment, and 39 children were physically tortured by teachers.
All in all, it is safe to say that collectively as a nation, we are failing our children, our future leaders who are to lead this nation to fulfil its ultimate ambitions.
Prioritizing the establishment of more robust child protection services and encouraging community awareness are just the first steps to educate the people about the signs of abuse and bringing about more resources available for help. We must also attempt to foster an environment where children in this country do not feel afraid to speak out against abuse.
Make no mistake about it -- this is a crisis that cannot be ignored, and we must confront this reality with a collective resolve to protect our most vulnerable citizens. The future of this nation depends upon it.
