Prioritizing judicial reform non-negotiable

A proposal of a separate and independent secretariat for the judiciary is nothing but positive

Update : 31 Oct 2024, 10:16 AM

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed's proposal to establish a separate secretariat for the judiciary is not only commendable, but one that deserves credit for outlining a progressive initiative that would greatly help the independence and efficiency of our judicial system.

Indeed, we could not agree more with the chief justice when he not only outlined the need for a zero-tolerance policy against corruption in the judiciary, but also the need to formulate a roadmap to regain public confidence through transparency and integrity in the judicial process.

With all of that in mind, such a proposal of a separate and independent secretariat for the judiciary is nothing but positive and at least one that brings a different perspective to a conversation about fixing our judiciary -- one that has historically gone nowhere.

This proposal, as reported, aims to create a dedicated administrative framework that will enable the judiciary to operate more autonomously from the executive branch, thereby reinforcing the principle of separation of powers

This separation of power is what has been missing in our nation, but one which is fundamental if we are to indeed establish a democratic identity.

Among the many advantages of such an initiative would be streamlining administrative processes within the judiciary; that the judiciary often grapples with bureaucratic hurdles that delay justice delivery is simply unacceptable.

A dedicated secretariat would also bring about much needed accountability and transparency, ensuring that judges and court officials are held to high standards of professionalism and integrity.

This transparency is crucial in building public trust in the judiciary, especially at such a volatime time for our nation when scepticism about all public institutions is at an all time high.

If we are successful in its implementation, it could also be a model for reforming other institutions with a renewed focus on a culture of independence and efficiency.

We hope therefore that this proposal is embraced and looked at as a positive first step towards judicial reform.  If we are to build a better Bangladesh, prioritizing judicial reform remains non-negotiable.
