Ensuring a safe and harmonious Durga Puja

Durga Puja embodies resilience and joy, values that have always resonated deeply within our national identity

Update : 09 Oct 2024, 06:02 AM
With Durga Puja festivities upon us, the need to ensure a safe and harmonious celebration is paramount, not just for the Hindu community in Bangladesh, for whom these are the most sacred of days, but for the entire nation as a whole.

The interim government has already taken a commendable step by declaring an extra holiday during the festivities, a move that not only allows for greater participation but should also foster a sense of unity among citizens and reinforce the importance of inclusivity.

It is troubling how isolated incidents of attacks against our minority populations continue to be prevalent. While Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has assured us that there are no specific security threats surrounding this year's celebrations, it is crucial that we collectively remain vigilant.

The Home Ministry’s pro-active measures to issue eight-point directives for local administrations and law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order is appreciated, and we must ensure that these safety measures are rigorously implemented.

The spirit of Durga Puja embodies resilience and joy, values that have always resonated deeply within our national identity and are more prevalent than ever before. Let us demonstrate our solidarity and commitment to harmony, ensuring that this Durga Puja is not only a time of worship but also a celebration of our shared humanity.

This year’s Durga Puja serves as an important test for the vision of Bangladesh 2.0 -- we may be experiencing a new liberation after a decade and a half of misrule from the Awami League, but this freedom is futile if it does not ensure safeguarding the rights and traditions of all religious communities in the country.
