Becoming a country for all ages

It is imperative that we devise solutions so that this generation can participate more fully in society

As we observe the International Day of Older Persons, it is imperative for Bangladesh, particularly in the wake of our newfound commitment to creating a just and equal society for all, to not only be aware of the needs of our older generation but also actively work to meet them. While Bangladesh currently enjoys a demographic dividend and a larger proportion of its population are young, that is no reason to forget about the plights of the older generation.

With Bangladesh’s life expectancy only set to increase, it is imperative that we shape a nation that does not treat its older generation as second-class citizens. This starts with the healthcare system, which has always faced significant challenges in catering to an ageing population.

Many older individuals also remain outside safety nets, with only some enjoying pension benefits. Expanding social protection systems and ensuring that all elderly citizens receive adequate support is essential for combating poverty and social inequality. We have heard conversation around approaches that include minimum pensions - these conversations must now be transformed into meaningful action.

Our public infrastructure has also been in need of an overhaul to supporting older citizens; from improving public transport accessibility to ensuring our roads and walkways cater to older citizens, it is imperative that we devise solutions so that this generation can participate more fully in society, be it for accessing healthcare, engaging in social activities, or even be able to get to family gatherings without hindrance and the need for constant assistance.

Bangladesh has many ambitions, but for the betterment of the entire nation to be seen as an inclusive and equitable society, it is becoming a nation that is fit for its older generation that is among the more important yet overlooked ones.
