The right choice

We must continue to trust our students and consult them

Update : 09 Aug 2024, 01:45 PM

From the very beginning of what can accurately be described at this stage as a revolution, it has been the students of Bangladesh who have led the nation towards where it is today - with newfound hope for a more democratic future.

To that end, the students’ overwhelming choice for Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus to lead the interim government continues their track record of making the right call.

Dr Yunus has long been held by most Bangladeshis and indeed across the world as an individual with incredible character who has proven time and time again that he is not only a committed patriot with Bangladesh’s best interests at heart but, more importantly, he has been so as a neutral citizen of this land, never associating himself with any political parties.

This neutrality of Dr Yunus is what makes him the ideal person for this job at this unprecedented time for this country.

For if we are to indeed be able to take this nation to where it can reach, if we can finally put behind the political mess that has dragged this nation down and stopped it from reaching its full potential, then we need leaders who work for the nation, not for the welfare of any political party.

The nation is still reeling from the effects of the abrupt end of Sheikh Hasina’s reign, with anarchy and looting and destruction still prevalent across several districts. The appointment of Dr Yunus should be the first step towards halting any and all such anarchist behaviour.

We must continue to trust our students and consult them, and hope that the full government, once formed, will have only the best interests of Bangladesh and its people on their mind.

The time for nation-building, as we have never known before, begins now.
