What transpired over the past couple of months should leave all of Bangladesh with nothing but utmost respect and admiration for the student population. If there was ever any doubt about the future generation of this nation, what they have been able to achieve this week should go a long way to quelling such fears.
However, that in the wake of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the ensuing chaos that followed, they have had the insight to not only dissuade looting and vandalism by the mob, but are also playing an active role in protecting minority populations in the country offers just more evidence that they are truly the shining light of this nation.
From returning arms looted at the parliament to standing guard outside temples, our students have, from the very beginning of this revolutionary change, been on the side of justice and doing the right thing. It is extremely encouraging to see that their attitude remains the same; there is no space for injustice, for vandalism, and for discrimination in this country.
As we move forward as a nation, we need to respect and recognize how we got here and to ensure that the students continue to have a voice in the affairs of state, moving forward. They have earned the right to a seat at the table and we should listen carefully to what they have to say.
Of course, while we commend our students for their continued efforts in steering this nation towards a better tomorrow, it is simply not possible, nor should it be expected, for them to be ones taking on such responsibilities.
In addition to the armed forces who must play their role, we as a people collectively have a duty and responsibility towards this nation and ensure that it remains safe and functional.
As such, we hope that miscreants and vandals are given no space, and that we remain united in bringing about hope and positive change. We all have a part to play towards building a better Bangladesh.
