Ensuring subsidies reach those who need it most

Accountability is essential in ensuring the system is not exploited

Update : 06 Apr 2024, 12:28 PM

With inflation unfortunately being a mainstay for quite some time now, the importance of social safety nets, primarily in the form of subsidizing essentials, has never been more apparent.

With Tk400 crore in subsidy amount every month provided to 10 million poor individuals holding government-issued cards, it also goes without saying that ensuring subsidized provisions reaches those who need it most in Bangladesh is crucial to address growing food insecurity in the country.

With that said, while we commend the government for realizing the ill effects of the continuous inflation in the country on the most vulnerable in society, instances of incorrect selection and mismanagement continue -- resulting in these benefits not reaching the intended recipients.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) needs to provide these essentials to tens of millions across the country and the correct identification of beneficiaries is no easy feat. There have been reports of ineligible individuals receiving subsidized food, while many deserving individuals are left out.

However, what cannot be disputed is the need to address this challenge, no matter how complex it might appear. A robust and transparent selection process based on clear criteria is the need of the hour to ensure that the subsidies reach those who need them the most.

Accountability is also essential in ensuring that the system is not exploited. Those responsible for selecting beneficiaries must be held accountable for any signs of mismanagement or corruption.

While the government must be acknowledged for implementing smart cards and phasing out regular ones that were at risk of forgery and duplication, the process must be sped up -- till date, about 4 million of the 10 million such cards have been updated.

With everything said, it is clear to see that ensuring subsidized provisions reach those who need it most in Bangladesh requires a multi-faceted approach and that there are complex challenges ahead. Regardless, for Bangladesh to march towards being an equitable nation, this is a challenge that it must overcome.
