Strengthening our friendship with India

A connection deeply rooted in common values, culture, and aspirations

Update : 17 Jan 2024, 10:16 AM

Now that the 2024 general elections are behind us, Bangladesh must, without delay, get back on track with regard to formulating plans and policies to further the nation’s ambitions. Among the most vital components of this renewed approach to progress is the emphasis on our diplomacy and strengthening bilateral relationships.

To that end, India has been our oldest and closest ally ever since the War of Liberation in 1971, and with that in mind, it is encouraging to see Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma immediately state that Dhaka and Delhi would be able "to achieve even greater momentum in our bilateral partnership" after his first meeting with new Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud.

Our relationship with India extends beyond mere diplomatic camaraderie and is a connection deeply rooted in common values, culture, and aspirations -- we are allies in the pursuit of regional stability, economic growth, and shared development.

As we navigate the challenges of the 21st century, collaborative efforts will not only enhance economic prosperity but also foster innovation and technological exchange. This economic cooperation extends also to the cultural ties that bind our nations, with our shared traditions, festivals, and a linguistic kinship and both nations having a vested interest in maintaining regional stability and security.

The evolving geopolitical landscape makes the Indo-Bangladesh friendship more pivotal than ever. As both nations face challenges such as climate change, public health crises, and economic fluctuations, a united front can enhance resilience and offer effective solutions. Bilateral cooperation in these areas will also radiate positive impacts across the South Asian region.

Strengthening this friendship is not just a diplomatic necessity but a commitment to regional harmony, economic prosperity, and a shared future. This friendship ensures a brighter, more prosperous tomorrow for both nations.
