As Bangladesh gets closer each year to checking off milestones, be it graduating from a least developed country (LDC) to fulfilling the SDGs (sustainable development goals) in addition to supporting a yet-growing population and equipping the nation, megaprojects continue to be a necessity.
While we can acknowledge the need for bridges, highways, and power plants, the historical pattern of delays and budget overruns are an impediment, no doubt hindering the realization of Bangladesh's full potential.
As we set our sights on progress, it is imperative to address the critical need for completing these megaprojects on time and within budget. The persistent challenge of meeting deadlines and staying within financial boundaries has, regrettably, marred the transformative impact these megaprojects could have on our nation.
Bangladesh's trajectory towards becoming a developed nation hinges on its ability to efficiently execute its projects. Delays not only escalate costs but also impede the anticipated benefits, causing a ripple effect across the economy. We have historically paid a steep price for these setbacks, witnessing missed opportunities and a slower pace of overall development.
The reasons for these delays are multifaceted, encompassing bureaucratic bottlenecks, inadequate planning, and unforeseen challenges. A culture of accountability and transparency, along with more intent to move from the planning to the implementing stage, are the non-negotiables that must be instilled. In addition, we must learn from our mistakes and do better.
We are at the cusp of transformative change, and the timely completion of our projects is a non-negotiable factor in this journey. By prioritizing efficiency, accountability, and strategic planning, we can propel Bangladesh towards a future where its full potential is our reality.
