It is extremely heartening to learn that as a result of various programs of the government, the ecosystem and biodiversity in the Sundarbans have witnessed progress in recent years; the 2023 survey of the Forest Department shows a significant rise in both flora and fauna.
The Sundarbans plays a pivotal role in not only maintaining ecological balance, but perhaps more importantly, protecting coastal areas from natural disasters and fostering biodiversity.
Checking deforestation while simultaneously encouraging afforestation projects have been instrumental in replenishing the Sundarbans; the government has imposed restrictions on cutting trees in the Sundarbans till 2030, and this combined with actions against illegal logging and fishing have sent a clear message.
The fact that 2,498 people were arrested and 1,169 water vessels were seized through patrolling from January 2018 to June 2023 shows that this positive trend noticed in the Sundarbans is the result of deliberate, pro-active measures.
It is impossible to stress just how important the Sundarbans are to Bangladesh, with its principal feature being as the frontline defender against the impacts of climate change, acting as a natural barrier against storm surges and tidal waves. Therefore, preserving the Sundarbans isn't just an environmental concern but quite literally a matter of national security.
We must give credit where credit is due and laud the government's pro-active stance. Simultaneously, it's imperative for every citizen to recognize the interconnectedness of our well-being with the health of the Sundarbans.
Through future sustainable practices and continued support and encouragement for governmental conservation efforts, we can collectively ensure that the Sundarbans thrives for generations to come.
