Sustainability will take our RMG to the next level

It is imperative to ensure the growth of the circular economy for sustainable development in the apparel sector

Update : 22 Dec 2023, 10:13 AM
The RMG industry of Bangladesh has been the one source of income for our exports for decades now. Year after year, while we stress on the need to diversify our export basket and develop more export-oriented industries, the fact remains that over 80% of our export earnings continue to come from our RMG industry.

To that end, while we cannot abandon the pursuit of diversification, what cannot be denied is that, for the foreseeable future, the RMG industry will continue to be the dominant export industry of the country.

It is thus imperative that the RMG industry does not lag behind in any way, and is able to function seamlessly, remaining current and up to date with global practices. For that, as noted by numerous industry experts, it is imperative to ensure the growth of the circular economy for sustainable development in the apparel sector.

That means that Bangladesh, which currently produces about 577,000 tons of textile waste in a year and imports raw materials worth $3.5 billion annually, must devise policies and practices that significantly reduce both numbers.

While the importance of circularity practices is increasing across the planet due to its beneficial impact on the environment, but, in a competitive market, incorporating these practices is fast becoming a necessity due to economic reasons as well.

Bangladesh remains among the most vulnerable nations to the adverse effects of climate change and as such, shifting to more sustainable practices in its most dominant export industry sends the right signal to the rest of the world.

Bangladesh has lofty ambitions over the next two decades. For us to reach there, our RMG industry must evolve to the next logical level.
