Powering our future

Increasing the capacity of our future power generation must be top of mind

Update : 19 Dec 2023, 01:41 PM

With a focus on tackling the current power crisis while acknowledging the demand that Bangladesh will have with regard to the future, plans to  transform the southwestern region of the nation into a powerhouse of energy is certainly the right approach.

And to that end, the power division’s plan to establish a 3,600-megawatt LNG-based power plant in Payra is a laudable first step in our pursuit.

There is no questioning the immense untapped potential that still is there for many parts of Bangladesh, and with our ambitions of becoming a developed nation in less than two decades, it is imperative that we prioritize addressing some of our most pressing needs, of which energy generation is among the most pertinent.

Bangladesh’s recent struggles with power generation have been well documented, and this year, especially after the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the nation saw not only surges in power prices, but frequent blackouts and load shedding, with citizens rightfully fearing that we may be going backwards with regard to our energy capacity.

To alleviate the fears felt by citizens, and for safeguarding our future, increasing the capacity of our future power generation must be top of mind. For this, despite Bangladesh’s power generation plans revolving around fossil fuel usage, the nation must strategize carefully to strike the balance between environmental degradation and power generation, and simultaneously explore more ways of utilizing renewable energy to provide power to the nation.

Bangladesh envisions a prosperous and equitable future, but for that to be reality, we require more power, literally.
